Bettinelli, whose contract at Fulham expires, will strengthen our goalkeeping team following the departure of Willy Caballero. The 6-foot-9 goalkeeper spent more than a decade at Craven Cottage, making 120 appearances for the Whites and represented the England Under-21 side at the start of his career. I know the area very well and it’s always been a dream of mine to come here, and now it’s finally here. A few years ago, when I was younger, there were talks but for some reason, they didn’t happen, but now I’m here. I’m very happy to be here and I’m looking forward to impressing the team and helping as much as I can.

Bettinelli began his career at Fulham at the age of 14 and made his debut for the club following their relegation to the Championship at the start of the 2014/15 season, having previously been loaned out to non-league side Dartford and second division side Accrington Stanley where he gained experience as a junior goalkeeper in senior soccer and was named the Crowns’ Young Player of the Year.

Following the departure of David Stockdale in the summer of 2014, Bettinelli returned to the fold and established himself as Fulham’s first-choice goalkeeper, making 45 appearances in all competitions and earning international recognition with his first call-up to the England U21 national team. Despite being the club’s number one goalkeeper at the start of the 2015/16 season, the Londoner suffered a knee ligament injury in the third game of the season and was out for seven months.

He made his comeback in March and was back between the posts for the final nine games of the season, although Fulham’s promotion chances continued to fade and they finished the season in 20th place. Although Bettinelli had a weaker season the following season, the Whites featured in both playoff semifinals against Reading, but he made amends 12 months later when Slavisa Jokanovic’s side finally sealed the Premier League Football title with a victory over Aston Villa. His contribution was especially important in the crucial games of the season when Fulham kept a clean sheet three times in the three play-off matches. Back in the Premier League Football, Bettinelli made his debut in the top flight in August 2018 in a 4-2 win over Burnley, starting a run of seven consecutive appearances. The goalkeeper’s performances were rewarded with a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad during the first international break of the season, a feat he repeated the following October, albeit without appearing for the Three Lions.

After a promising start to the season, however, six winless games meant that Sergio Rico wore the gloves for the rest of the season. The Whites won just seven league games and were immediately handed a ticket back to the Champions League. He went on to make 14 more appearances in the 2019/20 season as injuries again upset his rhythm before being loaned out to Middlesbrough last season, where he made 42 appearances and featured 13 times for the team that finished tenth in League Two.
