The famous coach, who was presented a CBE, was born in Oldham and raised in a house on Stafford Street, where local Football fans are looking to have a blue plaque located in his honor. The plans to honor Sir Walter don’t stop there, however.

Former English player Andrew communicated with Oldham Libraries and collected they have decided they will look to hold a display on Sir Winterbottom, which would contain memorabilia. The plan is for the exhibition to proceed place around November and December when the future FIFA World Cup 2022 is due to take place.

As a player, Manager English Football team Sir Winterbottom played for Royton Amateurs and ultimately signed for Manchester United in 1936 as a part-time performer, whilst he taught at Alexandra Road School in Oldham. He was obligated to retire at the age of 21 due to a spinal illness, which was later identified as ankylosing spondylitis.

He would go on to help in the Royal Air Force throughout the Second World War before being selected as the first England Men’s Football team manager in 1946.
