Qatar Football World Cup: Green FIFA World Cup claims are misleading, report says

Claims that the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar will not be carbon neutral are far-fetched and will mislead players, sponsors, and fans into thinking the event will hurt the Earth’s climate, according to a new report. Organizers underestimate the event’s carbon footprint, as well as rely on unsecured offsets to reduce emissions, a Carbon Market Watch nonprofit study said in a statement released Tuesday.

The Qatar World Cup 2022 is the latest in a series of sporting events, including the Beijing Winter Olympics which have said they are not compatible with carbon-based buying offset credits. Tokens are intended to quantify the contamination of the event by avoiding exceptions.

Experts say that for that to work, greenhouse gases that heat the planet as much as possible need to be eliminated and offsets should only be used to make carbon offset by taking green steps during games. A total of 32 national teams will play in the FIFA four-week tournament in Qatar in November and December, with an estimated 1.5 million fans expected to attend.

The event is estimated to produce 3.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, Carbon Market Watch said, citing figures released by the public by organizers. That includes direct and indirect carbon emissions from residential areas, infrastructure construction, and travel.

Organizers say 438,000 tons of CO₂ were released during the construction of a temporary stadium that could not be completely disbanded after the tournament. But when it comes to the six new stadiums that will be used after the FIFA World Cup, they say that only a small portion of the tournament’s revenue is estimated at an estimated 206,000 tons of CO₂.

Carbon Market Watch said this was allocated based on the use of shares meaning that the number of days of the competition was divided by the average life span of the stadiums to reach the share of the total output. Instead of counting the full construction costs, they look at the days when the stadium will be used, not the full life of the stadium, said Gilles Dufrasne, a policy officer at Carbon Market Watch and lead author of the report.

The track record for doing so is very small because it does not involve a large portion of the revenue. Although the FIFA World Cup athletes are determined to reaffirm their commitment to ensure that there are no white elephants after the tournament, incorporating all gas emissions associated with stadium construction will improve the event track record by 1.4 million CO₂, according to Carbon Market Watch. That equates to a power outage from nearly 180,000 US homes throughout the year. For more to know about Qatar World Cup tickets Click here.

Qatar World Cup 2022 organizers, called the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), are buying offset credits using a new standard regulated by the Global Carbon Council. The global voluntary reduction program – which was initially supported by SC is now operating as an independent organization, the committee said in a statement.

SC initially agreed to buy 1.8 tonnes of metric offsets from GCC, but Carbon Market Watch raised doubts that this target would be achieved. The GCC publicly lists only two approved projects a wind farm and a hydroelectric power plant, both based in Turkey. Only one of these has issued credits through the public register, Carbon Market Watch said, which does not mean that the current GCC credits are less than 150,000.

SC said in a statement that the FIFA World Cup was about to start so it makes sense that all carbon credits have not yet been purchased. An SC spokesman added that it would continue to buy credit after the tournament if its target was not met in time and could buy offsets in some of the world’s most respected programs after the first set of 1.8 million tons at GCC.

However, a Carbon Market Watch report raised questions about whether offsets from renewable projects could add any additional benefits to the climate. Clean energy has become so expensive that these types of projects are already economically viable, meaning they can either afford to sell carbon credits or not, the report said.

That means that in most cases no greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated and carbon bills are just financing the projects that will be built anyway. Various analyzes conducted by nonprofit researcher Source Material, published in collaboration with Carbon Market Watch and quoted in its report, found that it is very unlikely that a Turkish air project could be added.

The project has been in operation since 2018, two years before it started issuing carbon credits, and Turkey is ranked fourth in Europe in terms of wind power, which suggests it could trade without offset debt, concludes the nonprofit organization. The GCC said the extension of all its projects was evaluated and measured in terms of well-established principles by the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism.

SC noted that it is supporting other types of carbon reduction projects as part of its plan to eliminate the impact of the competition, which includes the planting of 679,000 trees and 16,000 trees in the country. The plants will be irrigated with recycled water, the statement said, and many species are found in the area and are drought tolerant. For more to know about Spain Vs Germany Tickets click here.

Unlike other modern World Cups, the 2022 tournament will be held in a cohesive environment – no stadium more than 31 miles (50 kilometers) from the center of Doha. Organizers say eliminating the need for players and fans to travel long distances by airplane between games will reduce carbon emissions.

They also upgraded energy-saving platforms and a new public transport system. However, Carbon Market Watch figures were also made before the announcement of the shuttle service of 168 aircraft a day that would allow fans to travel from five other cities in the region to watch the game without sleeping in Qatar.

It does not make sense to advertise the event as green based on proximity to the stadiums, and invite fans to find a place to stay away from the city and fly, Dufrasne said. It could be another example of how FIFA World Cup organizers disagree with their names and actions.
