Qatar Football World Cup: Qatar leverages the FIFA World Cup platform to raise awareness of plastic reduction

To celebrate this year’s Environment Day, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) hosted a series of workshops to raise awareness of plastic reduction strategies. The workshops were held during the One Tide Week campaign, which ran from 29 May to 4 June. Launched by SC and the Seven Clean Oceans as part of the One Tide program, the talks provided local organizations with tools and strategies to deal with plastic waste, costing the global economy the estimated US $ 80 billion annually.

In addition to the talks, the campaign included a roundabout discussion of future policy recommendations for tackling plastic pollution in Qatar, with a particular focus on sectors across the country that directly support the launch of the FIFA World Cup 2022. Participants also learned from SC’s efforts to reduce the use of plastic during major competitions including the FIFA Arab Cup, which was held in November and December last year.

Eng. Bodour Al Meer, SC’s Director of Sustainability, said: We are committed to using the FIFA World Cup to raise awareness of important environmental issues and to promote interaction between individuals and businesses. Campaigns such as One Tide Week help focus on larger issues such as plastic waste and promote ways to reduce plastic pollution.

With targeted strategy and concerted effort, we can all play our part in helping the environment. Majed Al Mansoori, SC Sustainability Specialist, said: We aim to leave a lasting legacy long after the FIFA World Cup took place. Increasing the amount of recycling plastic and avoiding recycled plastics will help us achieve our goals and workshops such as the one held during One Tide Week will bring us closer to our goals.

During the workshops, strategies for holding environmentally friendly conferences, seminars, and festivals were shared, with participants also discussing how to reduce the number of plastic products sold.

One Tide was created as a meeting place for all the sustainable development programs here in Qatar, says Tom Peacock-Nazil, Founder & CEO, and Seven Clean Seas. The main goal of One Tide Week was to bring everyone together and bring more understanding and knowledge to help advance the sustainability movement. Workshop participants welcomed the opportunity to learn and collaborate on the topic of plastic waste and how it can benefit private businesses and organizations. We are very happy to have such forums in Qatar, said Nasser Al Khalaf, CEO of Qatari food company Agrico. Our goal is to turn Qatar into a green country, so these talks are a great opportunity to meet experts in the field and learn about recycling companies. It’s a great opportunity to connect.
