Just over 58 years ago in San Jose, the home ground football team got the well of the FIFA World Cup containers, still the only time they have dodged downfall in 10 meetings. The Pan American Contest is one of those worldwide competitions that time fail to recall. It ran every four years from 1952-60, with developing squads from North America joining the big strikers from the South.

And however, the tournament is doubtful to be a Mastermind expert subject any time soon, it had its instants. In 1952 Uruguay and Brazil met for the first time since the well-known Maracanazo of 1950, when Alcides Ghiggia’s late goal stole the Football World Cup from the host, Brazil. A manly rematch over 4-2 to Brazil in goals and 1-1 on sending off.

Eight years later Brazil was the topic of one of global football’s more strange shorelines when they lost 3-0 to the host, Costa Rica. The consequence stood out then, it stands out even more now. Costa Rica’s record against Brazil going into Friday’s game in St Petersburg is dismal: P10 W1 L9. That includes two World Cup overthrows, 1-0 in a low-key game at Italia 90 and 5-2 in an enthusiastically open game 12 years later, and mixed pastings elsewhere.

Brazil’s football team was the FIFA World Cup winners when they lost to Costa Rica, they won the competition for the first time in 1958 and would recall it in 1962. But it was not David v Goliath so much as David v Goliath’s awkward younger sibling. The Brazil team were distorted from the one that won those FIFA World Cups. The Pan American Contest was planned at the same time as the admired Rio-Sao Paulo Contest.

Back then nearby Brazil had a national competition, so Pele, Garrincha and the rest took part in that as an alternative. Brazil chose a team entirely of Gauchos the name given to those who played in the Rio Grande do Sul, the southern state known for its cowboys. Brazil’s head, Enio Rodrigues, had five international attendances going into the Costa Rica game, their second of the competition.

The rest of the side had eight between them. It’s a maxim that there is no such thing as a bad Brazil squad, and the squad for the contest was still full of fine Football World Cup players. Most of them came from Gremio, who was in the middle of a run of 12 state championships in 13 years, the rest were from International, Cruzeiro and Aimore.

When they played Costa Rica in San Jose, they were caught cold by early goals from Guillermo “Memo” Valenciano and Edgar Quesada. An insulted Brazil bombed the Costa Rica goal thereafter but the goalkeeper Hernan Alvarado formed the kind of routine that is still being talked about in an overseas newspaper 58 years later. Rigoberto Rojas’s late goal added an extra polish of disbelief but a crowd of 25,000 happily gazed at the mark on the primitive electronic scoreboard, sitting right below a huge Esso slogan: Costa Rica 3-0 Brazil. After the game, there was giddy talk that Costa Rica might win the Football World Cup. With all four squads, Argentina and Mexico were the others playing each other two times.

Brazil had the chance for payback a week later. The component of surprise, and perhaps complacency, was gone. Costa Rica Football World Cup team lost 4-0. The Brazil game was Costa Rica’s only win out of six in the competition. It was the major result in their history until 1990 when they beat Scotland in their first-ever World Cup game.

As with England’s famed win at the Maracana in 1984, few Costae Ricans felt the need to kill their joy by highlighting the statistic that most of Brazil’s best players were misplaced. A win over Brazil is win over Brazil is a win over Brazil. Besides, Costa Rica had more than sufficient reason to think they could hold their own in a more leading company.

A couple of months before that game, they drew 2-2 with a full-strength Botafogo, the same “Esquadrao Immortal” who are permanently associated with Brazil’s first two FIFA World Cup wins. The team included Garrincha, the greatest Football World Cup winger of all time, and Nilton Santos, Brazil’s best-ever left-back.

The ultramodern left-winger Mario Zagallo; and the goal machine Quarentinha. Costa Rica’s draw was perhaps a worthier result, though it is not the one people recall. You never forget the first time you beat the Brazil Football World Cup team, particularly when it’s the only time.

Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica, 2014 FIFA World Cup game

It was a far cry from a first half in which Edinson Cavani put a relaxed Uruguay ahead from the penalty mark. Costa Rica recorded twice in three minutes through Campbell and defender Oscar Duarte to spark incidents of jubilation in Fortaleza. But they were not ended there as substitute Marcos Urena raced onto Campbell’s through ball and clipped his shot beyond Fernando Muslera.

To make substances worse, Uruguay had Maximiliano Pereira sent off in injury time for a spiteful challenge on Campbell. He will now be suspended for Thursday’s game against England football team. This was Costa Rica’s first World Cup triumph since 2002, and only their fourth in the competition’s history, against a Uruguay football team missing the injured Luis Suarez. The consequence means Costa Rica was top of Group D after Italy beat England 2-1, while Uruguay faces an uphill fight to qualify for the last 16. Uruguay looked in control for the opening 50 minutes. Cavani wasted a good early opportunity after Costa Rica failed to clear a Diego Forlan free-kick, with the Paris St-Germain striker slicing high and wide with the goal at his compassion.

Costa Rica World Cup defender Yeltsin Tejeda approved a needless free-kick wide on Uruguay’s left and when Forlan curled the set-piece into the part, Junior Diaz tried to stop Diego Lugano by wrapping his arms around his waist. The referee pointed to the penalty mark and Cavani did the rest, steering a sharp low shot beyond Keylor Navas’s dive and into the bottom angle.

And there was more play to come. With time running out, Costa Rica broke forward again and Urena sprinted away from Godin and captain Lugano, making perfect contact with his right foot, lifting the ball over Muslera to seal victory for Costa Rica Football World Cup team. The goal settled worries. Uruguay’s passing enhanced, as did their movement.

Forlan, the player of the contest in 2010, might have made it 2-0 before half-time when his shot struck Duarte’s leg, bouncing it high into the air and requiring Navas to pull off an athletic save. Costa Rica, though, was about to turn the game on its head with Campbell who is yet to make his Arsenal debut despite signing for the club in 2011- to the fore.

The striker, who consumed last season on loan at Olympiakos, first arrowed a shot barely wide from 30 yards, while Giancarlo Gonzales might have recorded twice, missing a difficult-headed chance and seeing a knotted toe-poke deflected into the side-netting. But in the space of three minutes, the game changed beyond credit.

First, Cristian Gamboa raced a seemingly lost cause wide on the right flank, reaching the ball on the by-line. He delivered a cross which grazed off the head of Celso Borges and fell to Campbell, who measured and fired beyond Muslera. Two minutes later, they cleared forward again and Walter Gargano approved a free-kick for a crude tackle on world Cup star Bryan Ruiz.
