Sheffield United paid Belgian side Genk ₤ 22million for Berge in January 2020 and the Norwegian was a key component in the Blades’ run to the Championship play-off’s last season. Berge is held in such high regard at Bramall Lane that Sheffield United slapped a ₤ 35m release clause on the 24-year-old, but that figure is unlikely to fend off interest from the FA Cup holders, according to the Yorkshire Post.

The Blades want to keep hold of the prized asset and see him as the man to help fire the club back to the Premier League despite already rejecting a bid from Belgian side Club Brugge. But with Liverpool circling and boss Jurgen Klopp a known fan of the midfielder, keeping hold of Berge in the last days of the transfer window could prove difficult.

Liverpool have endured a torrid spell of injuries to the club’s midfielders with Thiago, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all currently sidelined. Klopp has changed his stance on the transfer market after initially stating the club’s business was complete, on the eve of the new Premier League season.

But injuries to key players coupled with a stuttering start to the season has seen the German tactician go back on his word. We are working constantly on these type of things and we’ve spoken before about why sometimes it’s not happening, Klopp told reporters. Sometimes it’s expensive, sometimes not the right player, but then situations change. It needs to be the right player and we’re working. If something will happen or not, I don’t know.

Liverpool react to Sander Berge links as Virgil van Dijk fires warning to new signing

Liverpool have dismissed reports linking the club with a move for Sheffield United star Sander Berge. The midfielder had been tipped as an option to help ease the clubs injury woes in the centre of the park but it appears he will not be arriving in Merseyside. The Reds have also been linked with a variety of central midfielders however Virgil Van Dijk has warned any new arrival that they face a tough task to dislodge young guns Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho.

On Friday, Jurgen Klopp announced that the club would dive back into the transfer market for a central midfielder following injuries to Thiago, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita left him with a dearth of options in the centre of the park.

Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge had reportedly become a target for the Premier League runners up however the Daily Mirror reports that this has been dismissed by the club. German media have linked the club with moves for RB Leipzig star Konrad Laimer and, somewhat unexpectedly, a January move for Jude Bellingham. The Englishman was believed to be the club’s top target for next summer however this could be moved forward.

However, Van Dijk has warned any incoming player that they face an uphill battle to dislodge Elliott and Carvalho. The 19-year old duo have impressed during their time in the first team with both players scoring in the 9-0 demolition of Bournemouth on Saturday.

I don’t think they will be stopped from progressing, Van Dijk said when asked about the future prospects of Liverpool’s youngsters if a new face came in. The amount of games we play, we need a lot of midfielders. Midfielders are the engine of our team, they win so many balls for us. They are the engine of our team.

We need a lot of midfielders. You see the amount of games we play, we rotate a lot in midfield apart from Fabinho I think. We need everyone. I’m very impressed, very impressed with both. Harvey showed before his injury already and now he’s showing the same stuff as before. I’ve been impressed with Fabio as well, I’ve said it in pre-season, I didn’t know him before, I think he can be really good for us and as a club as well.

” You need that maturity as well. Especially when things are not going well like in the last two weeks, these guys have the right mentality that we need. They will have moments, good moments but they will have moments they have to learn from. That’s how football works. We are not robots, even if everyone is expecting that we are but we are not.”

Liverpool are expected to be busy in the days before Thursday’s deadline as they look to negotiate a deal for a new midfielder. In the meantime, Carvalho and Elliott will continue to build their case that they should be Klopp’s go-to men going forward. For more to know about Everton VS Liverpool Tickets.

Frank Lampard gives Neal Maupay squad update as second big Everton decision looms

Neal Maupay to set to be part of the squad when Everton take on Leeds United away in the Premier League on Tuesday. Neal Maupay is expected to be part of Everton’s matchday squad for the game against Leeds United.

The 26-year-old trained at Finch Farm on Saturday while the first team drew at Brentford. He had not played for Brighton and Hove Albion this season before sealing his move to the Blues on Friday. Frank Lampard said this would not prevent him from being the squad on Tuesday, with Maupay given the chance to further settle in at the club at a training session with a selection of players on Sunday.

Maupay has 26 goals in 102 Premier League fixtures and arrives on Merseyside with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin still absent, though nearing a return, from his knee injury. Everton have created chances but lacked a clinical edge in the opening games of the season and Lampard’s use of his only fit and recognised first-team striker, Salomon Rondon, has been limited despite the lack of options. Speaking after the Brentford game, Lampard said of Maupay: “We will see where he is but he will be involved in the squad, I’m pretty sure.

One change he will definitely have to make will be at the back after Mason Holgate was forced off the pitch at the Brentford Community Stadium with a knee injury. Holgate is the third centre back lost to injury in just four games for Everton, though Lampard is likely to stick with playing three centre backs at Elland Road. Michael Keane, who replaced the injured Holgate, is in contention for a start along with Seamus Coleman following his return from surgery.

Lampard also believes Vitalii Mykolenko can operate in the middle of the defence, allowing him to play Ruben Vinagre as left wing-back. Asked how he would address the latest injury in his back line. Lampard said: There are different solutions for the problem. It’s a shame because I think Mason was doing well.

” We know going to Leeds and Liverpool coming to us in the next two games it is two very mobile teams and I think Mason has been doing well against that sort of opposition since I have been here. So we will just have to find a way and stay together.”
