Pulisic said the US is going to Qatar with the intention of winning the Football World Cup and he doesn’t care about the odds being stacked against them. USMNT did not qualify for the last World Cup Football in Russia, but they reached the round of 16 in 2014 with Howard as their starting goaltender.

The US will face Wales, England and Iran in Group B but are approaching the tournament with confidence that they can make the playoffs. And Howard gave the team advice based on his experience in the Football World Cup.

Howard had a preliminary assessment of their chances of progress on Ben Foster’s Fozcast and stated that the first match against Wales was the most important match of all. I could see them leaving the group and I couldn’t see them, it’s weird, Howard said.

“The first game against Wales is the most important, in my experience in Football World Cups, four points can be enough to get through. Wales game without points. If they score three, then brilliant, happy days. If they get one, I don’t see them making it against England, but that’s okay because they then go into the last game against Iran knowing they can make it through the second team with four points.”

If you don’t get the result in the first game, then you are like the walking dead. You want to get to that third game with everything to play for. But four points should be enough by Pulisic’s standards, as the US captain is confident he’ll put together an unlikely streak in the competition. In an interview with GQ, Pulisic said, Look, I don’t know what the odds are or anything like that.

“We are going there with the goal of winning the Football World Cup. We go there with the mentality to win. We may not have the best odds and we are by no means the favorites, but we will go out there and give everything we have and hopefully make some Americans proud.”

Pulisic needs to be in top form to inspire his team to success, but he is battling for a spot in the starting XI at club level. Pulisic has only made two appearances for Chelsea this season, but Graham Potter has dealt a blow to the American by declaring he won’t see his team’s choice as a matter of personal interest.

Potter said: You can imagine that I am focused on Chelsea. I understand that all players have ambitions and they want to play for different reasons: for the sake of family, career or the Football World Cup. That’s all well and good, but it’s my job to pick the right team for any game. [I’m] not saying I’m always right, I’m not, but someone has to make the call.

A whirlwind of Welsh talent is quietly brewing at Nottingham Forest, with 21-year-old striker Brennan Johnson also representing the Premier League side. The far-sighted Johnson had a breakout season last year when he scored 16 goals in 46 appearances for Nottingham Forest when they were transferred from the Championship and Johnson maintained his Premier League goalscoring habit, scoring twice in six games. Interestingly, Johnson represented England all the way up to under-17 level before deciding to defect to Wales, turning the loss of England into a gain for Wales.

3. Ben Davies – Tottenham Hotspur

A stone in Tottenham Hotspur’s defense in both the Premier League and the Champions League, stable and reliable manager Ben Davies has also proved invaluable to the Wales national team.

Able to play both at centre-back and at left-back, Davies made 74 appearances for Wales and was part of the squad that made it to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

4. Joe Rodon – Rennes (on loan from Tottenham Hotspur)

A mainstay of the Welsh defense in recent years, centre-back Joe Rodon’s career has been rejuvenated after a loan move to Ligue 1 side Rennes. Having made 15 Premier League appearances for Tottenham Hotspur over the past two seasons, the Swansea native Rodon has now found himself at the center of a Rennes side that is aiming for Champions League qualification this season.

This season, Welsh football is taking over France and legendary midfielder Aaron Ramsey is also moving up to Ligue 1 to represent OGC Nice. Few Welsh players have had the club career that Ramsey has, who was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016 six years ago.

Having made more than 200 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, the 31-year-old Ramsey also represented Italian giants Juventus and last season played for Rangers in the Europa League final.
