Scottish rugby fans can make a difference at France Rugby World Cup

Scottish rugby fans should consider traveling to the France Rugby World Cup next year on a ‘carbon neutral’ basis, celebrating victories with wine instead of beer. This is a suggestion from National rugby correspondent Martin Hannan following the news that the World Cup in Qatar produced around 10 million tons of carbon emissions.

While that may be small consolation, Scotland’s failure to qualify at least means the team’s contribution is zero again, even though the Scottish experts chatted a lot in the qualifying stages, according to Hannan.

His comments come as claims by football’s governing body FIFA and Qatari officials that this year’s FIFA World Cup is carbon free have been called into question. Energy experts have calculated that instead of three million tons of carbon, about ten million are emitted into the atmosphere, more than three times the official figure.

A total of 60 million trees will need to be planted to offset the carbon emissions caused by the 2022 tournament. It is estimated that England’s participation alone resulted in at least 52,825.5 tons of CO2 emissions from fans traveling to Qatar.

Approximately 91,000 fans flew from England to Doha only to see their team knocked out by France in the quarter-finals. According to a report from the energy insurance company, around 316,953 trees need to be planted to offset England’s CO2 emissions.

Approximately 10,000 French fans also flew to the event hoping to win the final against Argentina, resulting in 5,625 tons of CO2 emissions. However, flights were not the only reason why this World Cup at least doubled the carbon footprint of the 2014 and 2018 tournaments in Brazil and Russia.

The report says that the eight stadiums used in the tournament were mostly purpose-built, accounting for 40% of the carbon emissions during FIFA and Qatar’s World Cup. This means that 24,000,000 trees will need to be planted to offset the carbon emissions caused by the construction and maintenance (and in one case, demolition) of stadiums.

“When Qatar was announced as the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup 12 years ago, FIFA came under pressure from the media, sports experts and activists for choosing a country with so little representation in the competitive football world. where there is no major national team and at a very high price, the spokesman said.”

He added: We know carbon neutral football is possible; take last year’s first full scoreless football game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Since then, Tottenham have committed to a nil-resulting match at their stadium and have topped the Premier League sustainability table for the third year in a row.

“And while it’s unlikely that 2.45 million fans will ever travel the world Greta Thunberg-style, there are ways to travel more sustainably. From booking with green airlines to considering carbon-smart accommodation options and supporting local businesses, sustainability will be a big question for fans going forward.”

Hannan said: Scotland once again made a zero net contribution to the tournament even though the Scottish experts blew a lot of hot air. At the very least, we will be at the France Rugby World Cup next year, so we can start thinking about getting the team and the fans to go carbon zero.

May I also suggest switching from wine to beer? According to the Upcycler’s Lab website, the wine is less harmful to the environment as it doesn’t require as much heat or water during the production and distillation process.
