Injuries marred his career, with a serious knee problem shortening his time at the Ospreys and further setbacks hampering him at Gwent. He joined the Dragons in 2021 but is retiring without playing a single game for them. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Dragons over the past 18 months, Allen said.

“Firstly, I will be immensely grateful to the management for showing me their faith and trust and giving me every opportunity to return to the game. Secondly, to the players for making it such a pleasant place to work. Obviously there were a lot of really low moments during the bad times, but having such a nice place to come to work really made such a huge difference.”

Finally, the department of physical therapy and, in particular, Ben Stirling. How many hours he spent on me in the physio bed, in the gym and traveling all over the UK to see specialists. He really went above and beyond to get me to where I am today, to a place where I can walk without pain again, which I really wasn’t sure I could do again. So I can’t thank him enough for that.

“I would really like to thank everyone for the opportunity to run out and represent the club on the field, but, unfortunately, it was not supposed to be. I wish everyone at the club the best for the future and I am confident that with the trajectory they are on and with the amount of improvement I have seen during my time there, more positive things are just around the corner.”

Dragons head coach Dai Flanagan said: I’ve known Corey for a few years as a person and he’s a fantastic rugby guy, with the work he’s done and the way he’s raised some young people, he’s tried his best to get back into the game, but sadly, that didn’t happen to him.

Gatland makes major call on Wales coaching team

Jonathan Humphreys and Neil Jenkins will remain on Warren Gatland’s coaching team as Wales’ new boss selects his backroom staff ahead of the 2023 Guinness Six Nations. Humphreys, a former Wales international and captain, joined the coaching team under Wayne Pivak in 2019 and will continue to coach strikers under Gatland.

Jenkins, who remains the Welsh points record holder, was first appointed skills and kicking coach under Steve Hansen in 2004 and worked with Gatland throughout his first tenure from 2007 to 2019. We are happy that both Jonathan and Neil will stay. as part of Warren’s new team, WRU CEO Steve Phillips said.

“The very nature of change at the helm of a national team entails the possibility of change and development elsewhere in the backstage staff.”

Gatland will also bring new blood with the sacking of Stephen Jones and Gethin Jenkins as offensive and defensive coaches respectively. Phillips added: I know that both Steven and Gethin understand this part of the process and should be commended for the courtesy with which they made this decision. We sincerely thank both of them for their dedicated services to Welsh rugby as coaches of the senior men’s team.

Warren Gatland removes assistants Stephen Jones and Gethin Jenkins

Rob Hawley is a top contender for a dramatic comeback to Wales after Warren Gatland ripped apart the coaching team he inherited from Wayne Pivak. On Thursday, Wales confirmed to Sportsmail that their new head coach, Gatland, has decided to forego the services of current assistants Stephen Jones and Gethin Jenkins.

Howley, who was replaced by Jones as Wales manager on the eve of the 2019 Rugby World Cup after he was found to have broken betting rules, is one of the names thought to now join the new Gatland regime. Former England and Harlequins manager Paul Gustard is also being considered as a possible new Welsh defensive manager to replace Jenkins.

Gatland returned to Wales earlier this month replacing Pivak, who had a disappointing 2022 and suffered shock home defeats in both Italy and Georgia. His first major challenge was the decision to walk away from Jones and Jenkins, although Gatland retained Pivak’s forward coach Jonathan Humphreys and longtime ally Neil Jenkins. Wales’ 2022 attack failed, but the decision to replace Jones and Gethin Jenkins is still important for Gatland.

Wales are moving fast to bolster their new coaching team and Gatland is expected to confirm the identities of their offensive and defensive assistants in early 2023. The possible return of Hawley, one of Gatland’s most trusted helpers in both Wales and the British-Irish team. Lyons, this would be a turning point for the former scrum half.

Following his dramatic exit from Wales in Japan and an 18-month betting ban, Hawley worked with Canada. Finding new helpers on such short notice is a difficult task for Gatland, who is now back in Wales for the second time after a brilliant first spell in charge between 2007 and 2019.

Howley is likely to be free and will no doubt grab another high-profile job in Wales. Gastard, who worked under Eddie Jones for England before taking charge of the Harlequins, is highly regarded in rugby circles but is currently under contract with France’s Stade Français.
