If they’re lucky, professionals might enjoy careers lasting about 15 years in the sport, and taking up a job as a coach or media pundit after retirement isn’t for everyone. No sector has been left unturned by players from around all levels of the game in their monies as they seek to set themselves up for life and regain consideration after hanging up their boots. Here are some of the most famous rugby players to have made currents in business.

Jack Nowell England Rugby player

The England Rugby team and Exeter Chiefs winger is the co-owner of The Swordfish Inn back in his hometown of Cornwall. Sit down on the arboriform, the pub has been a favourite of local fishermen, artists, and tourists alike for as long as anyone cares to remember and is well-known for its sturdy charm and feel.

Rugby player Phil Vickery

Founded in 2003 by the Rugby World Cup Winner & MBE, Raging Bull clothing has grown from public rugby to a brand that punches well beyond its weight having provided sportswear to national and international level sides. Vickery also began Cheltenham-based restaurant No.3 nine years after the former prop won Celeb Masterchef. With a passion for food and people, Vickery can’t wait to welcome you all to No.3 for truly unforgettable dining knowledge.

England Rugby player Manu Tuilagi

Making a Tuilagi Gin was often talked about in the initial hours of the morning by the brothers after many gins and tonics. As there are fifteen players on the rugby pitch, they have added fifteen botanicals to their gin. Some of the botanicals they use in their way are Juniper, Coriander, Orris, Sage, Thyme, Mac cloves, Lavender, Rose, and orange peel.

Rugby player Fran Cotton

Cotton Traders is an English apparel company, focusing on rugby apparel and leisurewear, based in Altrincham, Greater Manchester, England. It was established in 1987 by former England national rugby union squad captains Fran Cotton and Steve Smith. The new club making a play for Toulouse’s England Rugby flanker Willis.

A new club has come into the fray in a major bid to sign England flanker Jack Willis, who presently plies his trade in France Rugby World Cup. The former Wasp has been a major success for Toulouse since signing for the French titans in the wake of the financial collapse of the Coventry-based Gallagher Premiership side. Maybe the most sought-after name as clubs far and wide fought over the corpse of the English club, Willis has rapidly become an important part of Ugo Mola’s Stade Toulousain team.

Now Top 14 rivals Bordeaux Begles are in hot quest of the Englishman, with Midi Olympique informing that the west coast club has opened negotiations with the player. Bordeaux’s big-name signing ahead of next season has been France winger Damian Penaud from Clermont, but their other proven recruits to date have been a little more modest in desire. Could Willis be their star-forward signing going into the next battle?

Given the extraordinary nature of his former club’s collapse, Willis is a selection option for Steve Borthwick and is indeed part of his England Rugby World Cup squad for the Guinness Six Nations. That door would almost surely lose if were to sign a new deal with a Top 14 side. Willis made his first XV unveiling for Wasps at Sale in November 2016 in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, with his Premiership bow coming later the same month also in opposition to the Sharks.

Willis has weakened severe knee and ankle injuries to appear as a destructive poacher in the Premiership. In 2020 he was elected Rugby Players’ Union player of the year following an outstanding season in which he has become English rugby’s most efficient breakdown operator. During spells recovering from severe knee and ankle injuries, Willis realized that he needed to plan for life beyond rugby union. He took up an evening sanitation course with his brother Tom at Warwickshire College Group.

England Vs Samoa: Salford Red Devils Star Tim Lafai Opens Up on Rediscovering His Love for The Game

Salford Red Devils place Tim Lafai revealed that he revived his love for rugby league by joining the Betfred Super League side last year. The Samoan international loved a dream-launching campaign in the Super League in 2022, scoring six tries, delivering 14 assists, and was named in the Super League’s Dream Team as a result. The 31-year-old’s excellent form with the Red Devils saw him recalled to the Samoa national squad for their Rugby League World Cup campaign.

Lafai was a late call-up to Matt Parish’s team and his strong acts continued with six tries in five games for his country, who he had not played for in over three years. Lafai asked The Sportsman about how Salford brought back his love for the game.

“The whole purpose of me coming over here was to find that passion and love for the match again,” he stated.

Fortunately, I found the right squad that’s suited to the way I play and coach in Rowsley. I knew I had it in me, it’s just getting that right environment which I did in Salford, so it’s been an entertaining season last year. The Red Devils were widely applauded for their thrilling style of play in the Super League in 2022 and Lafai tells that all the pieces came together for Salford to be the eye-catching squad they are.

I think it’s just having a good coach and system around you that helps. And having the right boys around you, which I feel they’ve done well with recruiting. Now you’re finding the right spine and the kind of style that we play, so that helped. Lafai was pleased with a fresh three-year contract by the club in December for his outstanding contributions last term and people believe the Red Devils can go even further in the Super League in 2023. Salford Red Devils kickstart their 2023 Betfred Super League campaign on Friday 17 February with a trip to Leigh Leopards at 8 pm.

Australia Vs Portugal: Eddie Jones appointment before France Rugby World Cup

Australia’s Rugby Union squad was very surprised when they discovered who their new coach would be as Jones took charge after leaving his role with England. Members of Australia’s rugby team were left feeling nervous following the appointment of Eddie Jones. The 62-year-old lost his job as the England Rugby team’s head coach last December and wasted no time finding a new role.

18 years after his first stint managing the national side came to an end, he is now leading the Wallabies once again. The entire squad was left stunned when it emerged Jones will replace Dave Rennie as they prepare to build toward the Rugby World Cup. They have been placed in a group with Georgia, Fiji, Wales, and Portugal in France this September and October. And Jones’ hard-nosed attitude and intense, demanding reputation have been significant talking points in the Aussie dressing room. Scrum-half Nic White told: A few emotions there.

We had just done a camp with Dave and set the scene around the Rugby World Cup and we had been with Dave for three years. Initially, you’re saddened that he is not able to take us through to the World Cup. But the guy coming in, Eddie Jones, is an amazing coach, a guy who a lot of us admire he done and are excited about. Excited and I guess everyone is kind of quietly, you know, themselves about Eddie coming in.

Mate, he’s a world-class coach so there is a bit of excitement there, but he is also a whole lot of unknown for us players. It has been a ride. To heighten their feelings of shock and nervousness, back-row Ned Hanigan claimed the team did not know who their new coach would be until Rugby Australia dropped one of their most shocking press releases in recent memory.

It has been a bit hectic, he described. We were back in on Monday week and, yeah, we were in for a few medicals and got pulled in. The news got delivered quite quickly. Rens is out, and Eddie is in. Jaw hit the ground; it was all a bit of a shock. But it is an exciting year, nevertheless. Jones’ full-throttle approach is already in full force Down Under, and he could take revenge on England at the World Cup, with a potential quarter-final clash against his former employers on the cards. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, he said: “I’m thinking about retribution because the most important thing is to get Australia playing consistently well. If we happen to meet England on the way, well and good.

I might have a conversation with some of the players and not with the administration. Then we will get on with the battle. You could maybe pick it now the quarter-final (Australia v England) could be in Marseille. Jones did admit that there was still an element of ‘disappointment’ surrounding his sacking from the England setup. He commented: There was a difference of opinion. I felt that we were where we needed to be, but the RFU did not which is their prerogative, so I don’t hold any recriminations against them. Australia Vs Portugal: Portugal Rugby team through to Rugby World Cup

Portugal has qualified for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France after drawing with the USA in their crunch match in Dubai with the final kick of the game. Portugal secured their place with a 16-16 result in the last match of the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai.

They finish first of the last qualifier on a points difference and become the final team to qualify for France Rugby World Cup 2023. Portugal will take part in their second Rugby World Cup after 2007 and join Australia, Wales, Fiji, and Georgia in Pool C. It means the USA which will host the tournament in 2031, missed out for the first time since 1995. It means Portugal will take their place in Pool C, at France Rugby World Cup 2023, alongside Wales, Australia Rugby World Cup team, Fiji Rugby world cup team, and Georgia.

It’s hard to explain, it’s one of the best feelings in the world, Portugal captain Tomas Appleton supposed. For the rugby community, this is amazing, we’ve been missing from Rugby World Cup for quite some time, and we need a new generation to inspire the kids. Earlier on Friday, Hong Kong mounted a second-half comeback to beat Kenya 22-18 and claim third place in the standings.

Portugal and Georgia will go to battle in a high-stakes match in Toulouse in September but could avoid each altogether in the Rugby Europe Championship this year, thanks to the new two-pool format. The other side set to feature at the World Cup, Romania, will likely battle it out with Portugal to qualify for the REC semi-finals over the next two months. Rounding out Pool B are Belgium and Poland, two sides who topped the third flight of European rugby, the Rugby Europe Trophy, in 2022.

After making their debut in 2007, the Portugal Rugby world cup team will return to France for Rugby World Cup 2023. Applauded for their attacking style of play, Os Lobos secured the last qualifying place for RWC 2023 after back-to-back victories against Hong Kong (42-14) and Kenya (85-0), and a tense 16-16 draw with the USA at the France Rugby World Cup 2023 Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai.

Led by captain Tomás Appleton, Portugal became the ninth European nation to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2023. As they face Wales, Australia, Fiji, and Georgia in Pool C, the team will count on the French experience of many of their players including Samuel Marques, Mike Tadjer, and star Raffaele Storti as well as their French head coach Patrice Lagisquet, a Rugby World Cup finalist with Les Bleus in 1987.

Samuel Marques kicks Portugal to Rugby World Cup 2023

Portugal became the 20th team to qualify for the Rugby World Cup 2023 as they secured a 16-16 draw in a nail-biting deciding match of the Final Qualification Tournament against the USA. Os Lobos only needed a draw at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai to advance to a second Rugby World Cup, thanks to their superior points difference, and Samuel Marques secured it with the last kick of the match.

England Vs Argentina: Joe Launchbury targets return England Rugby team Steve Borthwick RWC 2023

England Vs Argentina: Joe Launchbury targets return England Rugby team Steve Borthwick RWC 2023

The last few months of 2022 couldn’t have gone much worse for Joe Launchbury. After Wasps, the club he captained went bust and the England lock moved to Japan in search of work, he broke his hand playing for new club Toyota Verblitz on Christmas Day.

England Vs Argentina: Joe Launchbury targets return England Rugby team Steve Borthwick RWC 2023
England Vs Argentina: Joe Launchbury targets return England Rugby team Steve Borthwick RWC 2023

Launchbury is hoping for better luck this year. A return to Test rugby and a place back in new England head coach Steve Borthwick’s squad for the World Cup is the target. The desire to play international rugby is something you don’t ever really lose. It’s still there for me,’ Launchbury told Sportsmail from the Far East. I understand that being over here now is making it harder for me and I’m missing the Six Nations but for sure it (England) is something I’m passionate about. I’ve been in conversation with Steve.

Like all the players at Wasps and Worcester, Launchbury lost his job when the two clubs fell out of existence in what amounted to an unprecedented financial crisis for the English game. The experienced lock subsequently upped sticks for a short-term move to Japan’s Rugby League One. He will return to England with Harlequins for next season and hopes to feature in the World Cup.

Launchbury remains eligible to play for England because his decision to move abroad was forced by the demise of his club. But his hand injury means he isn’t part of the Six Nations squad. Christmas Day was a bad day for me, he said. It was very different compared to Christmas back home and then I broke my hand in my first involvement during the game. It wasn’t the best start to my time over here and certainly not the best Christmas present. The plan wasn’t to get injured so early on, but I can’t speak highly enough of my experience.

From where I was a few months ago to where I am now, I’m just so grateful. Launchbury is still only 31 and with 70 Test caps, has a wealth of England experience that Borthwick will surely find hard to ignore once he is back on home shores. My experience of Steve is that he’s a very experienced coach and very knowledgeable around the forwards, Launchbury told.

I imagine he’ll get that forward pack back being feared by some other teams which maybe they haven’t been over the last period. There will be a bit of a reaction from them in the Six Nations which is a hugely challenging tournament. I expect England to compete much more than they have over the past few games. England opens their Six Nations campaign against Scotland at Twickenham on February 4 for what will be Borthwick’s first game since in charge since he succeeded Eddie Jones.

Launchbury, for now, will be limited to a role of an interested observer. He also wants to see a change in English rugby in the wake of the demise of his old club. I don’t know how it was allowed to get to that situation said Launchbury. I still firmly believe there’s no way a professional sport as big as ours could allow two of the top 12 teams in the country to go as they did. I think clearly, it’s got to force change.

It’s too little, too late for two clubs but the fact there are more conversations around it is only good moving forward. The RFU have a lot in their in-tray now, but hopefully working out a path forward for the game is something they must do. Richard Cockerill is the latest England coach to depart.

Richard Cockerill, the last assistant remaining from the Eddie Jones regime, is set to leave the England coaching staff after the Six Nations and take up a new role as head coach of French club Montpellier. The 52-year-old, who was recruited as a director of rugby by Leicester in September 2021, will depart as new head coach Steve Borthwick completes his overhaul of the coaching staff for the Red Rose team.

According to the Mail Online, Cockerill’s successor appears to have identified the man he wants to lead the set-piece salvage operation going forward Saracens coach Ian Peel. Eel has a long history with Saracens, having joined the club in 2015. Before that, he held the position of head coach for the England Under-20 team and also had a role within the senior national set-up.

The daughter of the all-time Premier League top goal scorer and England legend Alan confirmed she is dating Harlequins and England centre earlier this year. The 25-year-old singer has shared numerous shots with the popular speedster, who has represented his country four times. Photos shared across social media suggest Hollie’s relationship with the 26-year-old is still in its early stages.

Argentina Rugby team to play in final World Cup warm-up before England Rugby team opener.

England’s opening Rugby World Cup 2023 opponents Argentina Rugby team will finalize their arrangements by facing Spain in Madrid two weeks earlier than the two sides clash in Marseille. The Pumas beat England 30-29 at Twickenham in last year’s Autumn Nations Series, which was to be the final campaign of Eddie Jones’s time in charge, and the two sides will kick off their Rugby World Cups against one another at the Stade Velodrome on 9 September.

Michael Cheika’s side will be in the Spanish capital on August 26 for a clash against Los Leones, who was barred from the tournament after taking South African-born prop Gavin van den Berg in qualifying, who was later considered to be an ineligible player. The match is taking place as part of Spanish rugby’s centenary festivities and will be played at the Civitas Metropolitano, the home of football side Atletico Madrid which has a capability of over 68,000.

This fixture marks the second episode of ‘The Match’ after Spain lost to an All Blacks XV at the same venue in front of 40,000 spectators in May 2022. Argentina currently sits eighth in the world rankings but, after winning away in New Zealand and England last year, are many people’s dark horses to go deep in the Rugby World Cup in France later this year. The Spanish Rugby Federation believes the deal will help strengthen the bond between the rugby nations, with President Juan Carlos Martin Hansen saying: We are convinced that the Civitas Metropolitano will have great success and will lay the foundations to put Los Leones and Spain in the first line of international rugby.

The Argentine Rugby Union president Gabriel Travaglini added: It is a real pleasure to be able to play a test match again with the Spanish national team and participate in the centenary celebration of the Spanish Federation. Since that match in Madrid in 1982, in which the two teams played evenly, an excellent relationship began between the two nations, and many Argentine players have even gone to Spain to continue playing rugby.

This year we will meet again with Los Leones in a friendly that has transcendent value because it will help us improve our performance before competing in the World Cup in France. Argentina Rugby World Cup team will also face South Africa in a friendly warm-up match in Buenos Aires on 5 August, a fixture that falls outside of the streamlined 2023 Rugby Championship.

England Vs Samoa: England Rugby hero credits policy for Rugby World Cup win as he blasts.

England’s Rugby World Cup winner Neil Back has spoken out on the RFU’s new controversial laws and learned the key to the famous Rugby World Cup 2003 win under Sir Clive Woodward. Neil Back has reproduced fondly on England’s famous Rugby World Cup 2003 triumph but is now anxious contentious new gear laws could spell the death of the game.

Former British and Irish Lion Back played an essential role in England’s march to the glory Down Under two periods ago. But the ex-flanker is now progressively concerned that rugby is becoming distorted from when he lifted the Web Ellis trophy. The RFU’s choice to lower legal tackle height across English public rugby to below waist height from next season has been met with huge levels of dismay. The radical move by Rugby Football Union officials has been made in a bid to support player welfare amid growing care concerns.

The new rules, which apply from clubs and schools to age-grade and adult-level rugby from the third national tier downwards, aim to decrease head impact contact to mitigate concussions and brain injuries. But the RFU statement has received widespread backlash amid fears that the new rules will not make tackling any safer, chiefly for the tackler. And back believes the stringent laws will kill the game if players start getting chastised for innocently rivalling for the ball.

When I played, I would often go high to try to bout the ball because someone else had gone in lower, Back supposed. If you as the second man in gets punished for efficiently going for the ball tackling a player with the ball, then the game is dead. They are suggesting that a ball carrier can’t dip into tackles. But players do that mechanically. They don’t run into the tackle standing. This will cause issues.

The concussion thing needs looking at, but it is a contact sport. You don’t have to go head on the head to get a concussion. You can tackle at waist level or chest level and it is the movement of the head that can cause a concussion, not a direct hit. Back is best remembered as a master of the maul and he also thrived in the breakdown as Sir Clive Woodward guided the Red Rose to becoming world champions for the very first time.

He admits that newly appointed England Rugby boss Steve Borthwick has a huge job on his hands to duplicate his team’s historic success 20 years on in France. Nonetheless when sparkly on the crucial issues behind the Rugby World Cup 2003 win, Back credits Woodward’s policy of having no troublesome figures in the team and his conscious attempt not to overcomplicate the mammoth task at hand. We set our stall out but then Clive didn’t say right this is how you are going to get there; he requested how we were going to get there and shaped a leadership group in all the various areas to decide how he added.

So, we donated collectively to everything we did. It was a brilliant environment in which to train and work. We had no d***heads. Everyone was determined to do everything they could every day to be the best they could be. That is what we did. Going to that Rugby World Cup was an incredible experience. We learned from being knocked out in the quarter-finals in 1999 and found a way and created an environment to allow us to win most games.

Billy Vunipola implies he may be about to leave Saracens.

Out of favour England Rugby team’s No.8 Billy Vunipola has indirectly that he’s ready to leave Saracens after the Rugby World Cup, should a chance arrive. Now, with the abridged Gallagher Premiership salary cap starting to pinch, the ability of high-profile players like Vunipola, who are on the margins of the England Rugby team, to pen lucrative deals with clubs overseas is becoming ever more appealing. Vunipola and his older brother Mako have been frequently linked with moves to France in latest years but have eventually lumped for staying put in London.

Now that could be just about to change, for Billy at least. I think in the words of Saracens, we’ve done all we can do with them, Vunipola told The Big Jim Show podcast. In terms of wanting to knowledge something new, I’m open to it. This is a big year for everybody involved with the England Rugby team and Saracens. I want to get picked for England. I want to play for England. After that, we can see where we are. For me in my head, it’s firmly on trying to play as well as I can; finding a way to make more meters; finding a way to be more protuberant in games, particularly at the international level.

I’ll be in a better place to make a call on. if squads look at me and think He can help our side as a substitute for being a hindrance or not being that good. In times of suffering France Rugby team, Japan, or Super Rugby [I’m interested]. My wife’s Australian. It’s something that I’ve thought about before but I’ve never done. I mean I’m thirty now. Now would be the right time to pull the trigger on a bit like that.

England Vs Samoa: Samoa Rugby Team stuns England Rugby team in thriller to reach World Cup final.

Samoa Rugby world cup team stunned the hosts England Rugby team to reach the Rugby League World Cup final with a Golden Point win in extra time after a thrilling semi-final had finished 26-26 on Saturday. The Pacific Islanders, crushed 60-6 by the England Rugby team in the opening game of the tournament, produced a spectacular display at the Emirates Stadium and sealed a remarkable victory thanks to a daring drop goal by Stephen Crichton.

England Rugby team hit back from 20-12 down in the second half and turned late on when Herbie Farnworth scored a superb, move to try from a flowing move that started deep in their half. But Samoa would not be denied securing the biggest day in the island’s sporting history a final against leading champions Australia at Old Trafford next week.

“We knew if we turned up and played our best footy, we knew what we could achieve,” captain Paulo said.

We owe it to the people of Samoa. It’s all about the journey, and the journey continues. England Rugby team was unrecognizable from the side that damaged the Samoa Rugby team in the group phase and paid for an error-strewn display.

“We were the second-best team. Plenty of effort but work alone isn’t good enough,” captain Sam Tomkins told.

A fired-up Samoa made light of a first-half sin bin for Paulo and lost both Fa’amanu Brown and Oregon Kaufusi to head injuries after a horrifying collision to lead 10-6 at the break. Salford’s Tim Lafai silenced the home crowd to give Samoa an initial lead, going over in the corner after Jarome Luai’s pass.

England Rugby team failed to execute from prime scoring positions and even when Paulo was shown a yellow card for crudely dumping Tom Burgess to the ground, their finishing betrayed them. There was more trouble for Samoa when Brown and Kaufusi smashed headlong into each other, and both left the field, soon after Kallum Watkins went over under a challenge from Lafai, but his try was disallowed for spilling the ball.

Samoa Rugby team was breached in the 25th minute when George Williams rode two tackles and passed to Elliott Whitehead to score with Tommy Makinson converting. But some slack England defending allowed Ligi Sao to burst through a gap and slide over with Stephen Crichton converting. England took the lead five minutes into the second half when Lafai made virtually his only mistake, spilling the ball under his posts to allow John Batemen to pounce and score with Makinson converting. But Samoa was not finished.

They domestic the lead in amazing fashion as Luai, on the last tackle, improvised a volleyball-style pass for Crichton to score. England Rugby team looked flat and Samoa relentless and when Luai set up Lafai to score in the corner to give them a 20-12 lead they were in dreamland. But a desperate England Rugby team reduced the arrears when Farnworth piled through a wall of Samoan defenders for a try which Makinson rehabilitated before a Makinson consequence made it 20-20.

Samoa Rugby world cup team appeared to have clinched the win as a careless pass by Victor Radley was stopped by Crichton who ran joyously from the middle line to put Samoa on the cusp of the final. There was another twist, though, as Williams fed Pimple deep in the Samoan half and he sent Farnworth flying clear for a try that Makinson converted to take an epic contest into the lottery of Golden Point. With the followers on the edge of their seats, Samoa got the first chance with a drop goal charged down but minutes later, from a similar position, Crichton split the posts to spark wild revels from the Samoan players and followers.
