The kingdom of Morocco will deploy to Qatar, ahead of the Qatar Football World Cup, a team of cybersecurity experts at the request of the Gulf country for the global event taking place across November and December, local media reported.

The news surfaced after the visit Abdellatif Hammouchi, the head of Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security and Territorial Surveillance, paid to Qatar during the Milipol Qatar 2022, an international event for homeland security and civil defence, held in Doha, May 24-26.

During his visit, Hammouchi held meetings with Qatari Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and Qatar’s Director of Public Security, Saad bin Jassem Khalifa as well as with the country’s security officials in charge of the coming football event.

The Moroccan official also visited the Lusail Stadium, where the final of the Qatar Football World Cup is scheduled to take place. Hamaguchi, the first official from a friendly country to visit this sports centre, toured the various facilities of the stadium.

Hamaguchi also visited the cybersecurity command centre, where he had a working session with senior Qatari officials. At the end of this meeting, it was agreed that Morocco will send a team of experts in the fight against cyberattacks to strengthen the effectiveness of the centre. The Moroccan official also visited the operations room in charge of security arrangements for the Qatar Football World Cup.

Other local media reported that as part of securing the Football World Cup 2022, Morocco and Qatar have agreed to send more than 6,000 agents of the Moroccan National Security and Gendarmerie, to ensure the security of the world Football event.

Qatar will become in November the first Arab and Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA world tournament. Morocco 2020 already proposed to assist Qatar in successfully organizing the World Cup by offering to provide the Gulf country with human and logistical assistance for the competition. Aside from Morocco, several other countries including Turkey, France, the US and UK will assist the gas-rich country in security matters related to the world cup.

“I am delighted that our joint squadron with the Qatari Emiri Air Force of Typhoons will patrol the airspace during the tournament,” he said.

The Ministry of Defence will support Qatar with military capabilities to counter terrorism and other threats to the tournament through maritime security, operational planning, and command and control support, according to a defence source who spoke to The Telegraph. The Joint Typhoon Squadron, also known as the 12 Squadron, is the United Kingdom’s first joint squadron since World War II and will be in charge of counter-terrorism operations.

The UK-based Typhoon squadron is headquartered at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and has regularly trained in Qatar since its creation as a combined squadron in July 2018. The Qatari Emiri Air Force will be in charge of air security and will carry out the majority of the operations, while the UK will contribute with experience and capability.

The first Typhoon aircraft are planned to be delivered to Qatar in August of this year. This was in part gained through the UK’s Olympic experience in 2012, according to the defence source. Qatar is one of the UK’s most important defence customers and the two countries have worked together on military concerns. The UK and Qatar announced the formation of a new Joint Hawk Training Squadron in November of last year to deliver advanced and high-speed jet training to pilots.

Then, in December, officials from Qatar and the United Kingdom met to discuss collaborative security for the Qatar Football World Cup. However, the UK is not the only country that will support Qatar in security concerns and matters throughout the Football World Cup.

Project Qatar to showcase multi-billion-dollar post-Qatar Football World Cup projects

Several multi-billion-dollar structure projects post-Football World Cup will take centre stage at the Project Qatar which will run alongside the Hospitality Qatar from June 6-9 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, officials publicized at a press session yesterday.

Billed as a ‘One Show, Multiple Chances’ event, both Project Qatar and Hospitality Qatar imagine receiving over 20,000 visitors, with the input of more than 300 showing companies dispersed among 180 international firms from 30 different republics. The event will also feature seven official national pavilions, along with 120 Qatari companies from major government and semi-government agencies, as well as the most prominent private sector companies.

While the Public Works Authority, a strategic partner of the event, will highlight its role and contributions over the past years in preparing the necessary infrastructure for hosting the upcoming Qatar Football World Cup, several public and private sector groups will also showcase their post-World Cup projects in the country, a reflection of bright prospects for Qatar’s construction industry.

Replying to The Peninsula during the press conference, officials from Investment Holding Group (IHG) and Metito said the companies are currently working on new multi-billion dollar investments in Qatar, which will be completed in the next few years.

“Diversification is extremely important. We’re embarking from the medical to tourism sectors. We’re building a 7-star hospital near The Pearl-Qatar, and a Korean Medical Centre which will offer a more holistic approach. It’s a considerable investment in healthcare going forward. And we’ll continue working in that industry, and continue expanding our healthcare business in Qatar,” supposed Dr.

Henrik Christiansen, Group Chief Executive Officer at IHG, added that both hospitals are valued at around $2.5bn. Metito, which has recently been awarded the biggest desalination plant and largest wastewater treatment plant projects in the world, is also heavily investing in its Qatari processes which began in the mid-70s.

“We are exporting and executing a lot of projects to different countries from our Qatar office. Locally, we’re participating in over 30 oil and gas projects, amid the North Field Expansion. Also, there are a lot of opportunities for water and wastewater treatment in Qatar. More recently, we have partnered with another main client for a $1bn investment in a treatment plant in Qatar for the next two to three years,” supposed Walid Oraby, Executive Director at Metito.

Other companies which will be featured during the expo include Suhail Industrial Holding Group, the largest industrial company in the Qatari private sector. The company is currently travelling opportunities in industrial production built on the recycling of metals.

He said that several international trade delegations will also be able to benefit from their visit to Qatar and assess the country’s readiness for the upcoming championship.

In particular, he called attention to the visit of a large delegation from the Federation of Saudi Chambers of Commerce, comprising more than 25 members, which is the highest commercial delegation from the Saudi private sector to visit Qatar since relations returned to normal between both countries.
